Mary Eliza Mahoney was born on May 7, 1845 (some sources say April 16, 1845), in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. After working for several years as a private-duty nurse at Boston's New England Hospital for Women and Children, in 1878, Mahoney was admitted to the hospital's nursing program. Mary Mahoney was admitted to the nursing school of the New England Hospital for Women and Children, and became the first Black woman to complete nurse's training in 1879. She was also one of the first Black members of the American Nurses Association, and has been credited as one of the first women to register to vote in Boston following the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. Mahoney was inducted into both the Nursing Hall of Fame and the National Women's Hall of Fame.

As the police approached the shooter, Chief Jennings told reporters, the officers were met with more gunfire from inside the home. After a long standoff, two women in the home were taken to a police station to be interviewed, the police later said in a statement. Video posted to social media appeared to show over a dozen police cruisers and two officers running at the scene.

The standoff broke out Monday afternoon when officers arrived at a Charlotte home to serve warrants against Terry Clark Hughes Jr., who fired on officers with a high-powered rifle, according to police in the USA Today story. Hughes was shot dead on the front lawn in the standoff and left eight officers shot and four dead from their injuries. The violence broke out as the task force was serving a warrant on a suspect in possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The subject, who was not publicly identified, began shooting with a high-powered rifle, Jennings said. Task force members returned fire and killed the suspect in the home's front yard, he said. Marshals task force was serving a warrant at a home Monday in Charlotte, North Carolina, officials said.
"Even though our officers were trying to take cover, they were at a disadvantage because the suspect was up at a higher level and they were trying to return fire from a lower position to an elevated position," the police chief said. When the standoff was over, a female and a 17-year-old were found inside the house and were brought to a police station as persons of interest, Jennings said. A later statement said both individuals were female and that they had exited the home following negotiations with a SWAT team. The man then left the house while armed, police said, and officers opened fire and shot him in the front yard, where he was pronounced dead. "There's indication that the suspect saw them coming to the house prior to them getting to the front door," Jennings said during a news conference Tuesday. Biden also released a statement on Monday in which he called the officers "heroes," saying he and First Lady Jill Biden would pray for their families and recovering officers.

The accommodations on the Mariner of the Seas were excellent, and the cleanliness and service in the cabins were well above average. There were plenty of fans on board who were more than ready to head-bang to those old favorites and then were joined in by the relatively newer French band Klone who will make your neck ache just by watching them. Bridging the gap between old school and modern prog metal, Haken brought it yet again with a commanding nighttime Pool Stage show, complete with lasers and fog, their frontman Ross Jennings confidently owning the stage like a “Cockroach King” as Ray Hearne bashed it out behind the drum kit. Fernando Perdomo usually closes Kerzner’s sets with a nearly Townsend-esque treatment of his guitar; this year the guitar was literally launched into the audience during the finale. But it came back for Perdomo’s own sets with his Out to Sea Band, featuring music from his four instrumental albums of that name, along with a piece by featured guitarist Dave Bainbridge. More than any Cruise to the Edge prior, the range of artists was wildly diverse.

Single passengers and large traveling groups alike were well taken care of and everyone I spoke to felt impressed and, above all, welcomed – even by the ever-vigilant concert security staff. The sense of musical family that only Cruise to the Edge can create, was in abundance in all corners of the Mariner of the Seas. A Panoply of Prog, the cruise is always an adventure, even for one who has been fortunate enough to have attended it several times.
Music gets started each day around 11am and usually doesn’t end until after 1am, so there is little down time when a choice doesn’t have to be made. Lifesigns, this time in the Theater, were a sight and sound to behold. Playing the whole of their latest album ‘Altitude,’ Prog’s next big thing absolutely flourished in this larger environment. How wonderful for John Young, Dave Bainbridge, Jon Poole, Zoltan Csorsz and sound designer Steve Rispin. In my review of ‘Altitude.’ I mentioned a certain musical ‘glow’ that Lifesigns create in studio. Live too, there was a marvellous glow that was palpable in that room, and hundreds of fans were converted that night.
McStine and Minnemann had impressed me so much in their first show that I went back to see them a second time on the pool stage, undeterred by the hurricane-like wind. Minnemann lost a stick at one point and did not have a spare handy until the next song. You would never have known it, because his one hand is as quick as most other drummers’ four limbs combined.

Meanwhile the hard-working crew made sure things ran as smooth as possible from lighting to sound and everything in between.
All accommodations showcase a relaxing vibe with cool blue hues reminiscent of the calming ocean with silver and turquoise accents. Stateroom’s feature new furniture, carpeting, headboards, and televisions. Musos, including many of the featured Artists, gravitated toward Simon’s Phillip’s sets with his mind-blowing band Protocol. Alan Hewitt & One Nation melded a bit of fusion into their uplifting rock performances, while Stu Hamm laid down the bass grooves with his trio for a wonderfully diverse set. More experimental music came from keyboardist Adam Holzman during a solo spot which combined electronics with jazz piano and a guest visit from Randy McStine for a spacious “Here Comes the Flood”.

I managed to catch a few minutes of the ever-amazing Adrian Belew Trio, introduced by veteran CTTE host Jon Kirkman in Studio B. We were all happy to be Belew’s ‘flesh baffles’ for that show. The band were all dressed in holiday shirts, and the coolest bassist on the ship was undoubtedly Julie Slick. Check-in was made much easier this year, with the introduction of an online cruise app.
Finally, the classic rock era was well represented by Wishbone Ash, Martin Barre, and The Steve Morse Band all delivering memorable Pool Stage performances that kept the flame burning bright. The one-off collaborations continued elsewhere on the ship, with the Morse brothers, Keegan and Dave Bainbridge launching into The Beatles’ “Golden Slumbers” medley. During Jordan Rudess’ keyboard sets, all sorts of guests crashed the stage, including Portnoy and Haken’s Charlie Griffiths for “The Spirit Carries On”, and Joe Payne singing medleys from Genesis, Yes, and Queen.
